Message From the Principal

August 14, 2008.

Dear parents,

Welcome to The First Day of School and to ASFM’s 80th Anniversary Year!

The First Day of School

On the first day of school,
Everything is new,
It’s your first day with me,
And my first day with you,

I’ve been waiting for today,
Have you been waiting too?
You look just like yourself
So I feel at home with you,

There’s a cubby for your coat,
There’s a tag with your name,
There’s a chair and place for you,
I’m so glad you came!

The Administrative Team is welcoming three new Assistant Principals  who will be working directly in the area of Curriculum and Instruction.  Vincent Ventura works with grades Nursery -2 as the AP for Literacy, Lisa Stone is the AP for Literacy for grades 3-5, and Joe Stanzione is the AP for Specialist and Content Areas for Kinder-5th.

Vincent has a strong background in Literacy Coaching from his work in New York City schools, and is in his second year at ASFM. Lisa has a distinguished career as a teacher and  Literacy Coach, and is starting her seventh year at our school. Joe is stepping out of the classroom after a very successful fifteen year career as a teacher and team leader, and is beginning his fourth year at our school.

ASFM is committed to providing your children with the best educational program possible and one of the ways that we can achieve this goal is by continuing to support classroom implementation of these best educational practices by training and working with teachers directly. These AP roles have been created with that purpose in mind as follows:

* To review curriculum with teachers so it is implemented using the best instructional strategies that meet student needs.

* To ensure “equity of access” to learning for all students (this ensures that every child is exposed to the same instructional programs regardless of the section that they are in).

* To help create learning opportunities for your child by aiding teachers in their planning and teaching.

We are welcoming seventeen new teachers this year, and I am pleased to report that their adjustment to their new work place has been very positive. The poem that I am sharing with you comes from one of our new teachers; Ms. Lewis from 2G.

Today we are finishing our orientation program where teachers have been busy in training and induction programs and in their most important job; getting ready to welcome students to their new school year! The Missouri staff looks forward to celebrating our accomplishments as a school community and moving forward in our quest for continued school improvement.

The Missouri Campus was given a facelift over the summer months. When you visit our school we invite you to check our new bathroom facilities, the air-conditioned gym foyer, the artificial turf on the second grade playing field, and the improvements to second floor classrooms.

Today, you also took the first step towards our new dismissal plan when you registered your car during your visit to meet the teacher and drop off supplies. Meetings will be held next week to explain the process. It is important that you come to one of the three scheduled meetings. Please check the calendar of events for details.

A new cafeteria provider, La Mesa Rosa will open up service to our students in grades 2-5. We are hopeful that this change will better meet the needs of the community regarding nutrition, variety and reasonable prices.

One of our school wide goals for this year deals with a topic that is at the heart of your concerns as a parent and to our commitment to supporting students’ holistic development.

Following is Goal # 5, which all the staff will be supporting through their work with your children each and every day! Under the Goal we have some indicators of ways that these values will be promoted in the classroom. As we know, goals yield better results. Thus, our expectation is that this year we will make important progress in our commitment to make ASFM a Safe and Caring school for all of our students!

5).Support the Social- Emotional Development of all students based on the values and principles found in the Eagle Way and the Mission of the Safe & Caring School:
(All)

Order and neatness are also going to be stressed through classroom expectations and everyday interactions. All students will be expected to take good care of their belongings, keep an orderly work space and clean up after themselves. We hope that this will reinforce the habits that you are trying to develop at home.

We encourage you to keep the lines of communication open regarding any situation that involves your child’s experience at ASFM. We are all only one email, or telephone call away, so please contact us if we can support your child in any way.

My warmest wishes for a most successful 80th Anniversary Year!!!

Sonia Keller, Ed. D.

NEED TO KNOW
For the school year 2008-2009 we will be implementing a new dismissal system at Campus Rio Missouri with the goal of making it a safer process for your children. We need everyone’s cooperation. Please take note of the following:
All students, Nursery through Grade Five must register for the dismissal plan, regardless of how and when they are picked up: by a parent, in a carpool, walking, or after the after-school sports program.
Either the Mother or the Father can complete this dismissal registration process.
The Mother or Father of the youngest child, by grade level, in a carpool is responsible to register all children who are part of their carpool. If there are two or more children in the “youngest” grade level, the parent responsible to register would be chosen by alphabetical order by first last name.
When completing the registration process, please provide the following information: 1) First name, last name and mother’s maiden name for each child in the carpool; 2) Grade level and section (for example 2B)
You will be able to register your child(ren)/carpool on Wednesday, August 13 or Thursday, August 14th from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. and a final opportunity will be available on Tuesday, August 20th from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm.
Each family will need to pick up your two “Pick-up Cards” for the 2:45 pm dismissal on Thursday, August 28th from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.
During the Open House sessions, we will be explaining the new dismissal system in the Hamlet Theater for all students from Pre-Kinder through Grade Five.
Please plan to attend the session that corresponds to your youngest child. It is your responsibility to understand the new dismissal plan. We will also hold a separate informative meeting on Friday, August 29th at 9:00 am for drivers, maids, etc. who may be responsible to pick up some of our kids. It is extremely important that any adult who is going to be part of the dismissal process understands the process so it will function smoothly and accomplish its goals.
We will be implementing this new dismissal process on Monday, September 1st.
