The complementary programs are intended to support teacher instruction by providing resources to improve instructional methodologies, specify departmental or grade level program components, and link to other general sites that may be helpful to the teacher.

The goal of curriculum design at ASFM is to improve student learning by using current teaching methodologies based on the latest educational research.

The curriculum vision is created from this stated goal and teachers at ASFM use various supporting components to achieve the vision. The backbone of achieving the vision is a coherent, comprehensive, and spiral curriculum based on standards and benchmarks.

The original source for most of the standards and benchmarks is from McREL Content Knowledge: A Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education.

Standards documents are dynamic and under periodic review by administration, curriculum coordinators, curriculum councils, department heads, team leaders, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In addition, teachers design assessment tasks correlated to the standards for their course which provides another means of determining the level of student learning.

While academics are important, ASFM believes students should develop specific habits and values to support their education. Habits of Mind and Character Education provide students with the nonacademic or personal growth required to become active, productive, and successful members of a global society.

Teachers gain continuous professional development to maintain ASFM's quality and excellence in academic instruction. This professional development is achieved through outside presenters and workshops or conferences, staff inservices presented by ASFM teachers, collegial workshops and clubs, and teacher participation in professional organizations within their specialties.

ASFM is committed to supporting a school culture that provides optimal learning opportunities for staff and students. The Staff Development and Evaluation Program is based on the premise that effective teachers are actively involved in their own professional growth and development on an ongoing basis. The program focuses on professional development initiatives, feedback on the part of administrators and peers, and self-reflection on the part of individual teachers. The ultimate goal is improved student learning as a result of the implementation of effective teaching practices.
